Here in the Netherlands you hardly see that kimonos are worn. Every summer I see mostly American bloggers parading in the most beautiful colorful creations, often worn on shorts for such a wonderful boho festival style. But it is rarely worn here. I am wearing a kimono style dress today!
Kimono dress from Japan
I can still remember my grandmother having a beautiful one in the 70’s. My grandfather then worked for Honda and went to the Honda factory in Japan and brought a real silk Japanese kimono for my grandmother. What a shame it has never been preserved! I have to do it with a kind of kimono dress!
Black and white printed kimono dress
I wore this dress as a kimono, but today I wear a dress in a kimono style. With the typical wide sleeves. Do you know that kimono actually means, what someone wears? And that the belt is called an obi? There is a whole culture around the kimono. Very nice to read. This dress is not made of silk, but because of the black/white print and the sleeves it looks a bit like the kimono. That way I also participate in the trend of my American blogger friends!
I styled it with black and gold tassel earrings, a bit Eastern style, a black statement ring and golden bracelets. The sandals are rose gold, with a tiny heel. The soft colors of the sandals fit very well with the dress. If I wanted a more cool look I would have opt for these black sandals!
Shop the kimono dress look!

That is a lovely dress on you! While I have a lot of kimonos (I love them!) I don’t have any kimono dresses, although I used to have a few. I find my kimonos get a lot of wear, they are such a fun outfit topper – you see them around a lot here in Australia too! 🙂
Thanks for the link up!
Hope your week is going well 🙂 It’s turned into a rainy one here!

Thanks Mica! I guess it’s starting to turn winter at your part of the world? Have a great weekend!
What a wonderful story sbour your grandmothers kimono. Is she wesring this souvenir from Japan?
You look gorgeous in this dress Nancy. Here in Mannheim I never see people wearing a kimono.
Author
No it’s not popular here. She wore it as a evening dress at home!
I love kimonos and yet I don’t have one? I often see bloggers wearing them and I really like them. You’ve styled the dress perfectly with the accessories Nancy. Stunning. xx
Author
Thanks Laurie. Because you don’t see them a ;lot in stores in Europe I think!
Beautiful kimono dress Nancy. Love the style and pattern:) thanks for hosting

Thanks Claire, my pleasure!
It’s not a look you see much in the UK either. But your dress will have more impact as a result! Love the print. How lovely for your grandmother to have had a real silk kimono.

Yes but I wished we saved it! Thanks Gail!
I love a piece that does double duty – a kimono you look great in and then can wear as a beautiful dress is such a find! You look great Nancy!

Well, Nancy, you know that I am loving this dress! Give me all the kimonos and kimono inspired things, please. I just styled a kimono as a dress last week but I have not shared the photos yet! My mother had an authentic kimono from Vietnam that her fiance had sent home to her when he was stationed there during our conflict with Vietnam back in the 1960’s. Unfortunately, her fiance was killed while there and the kimono has been lost in various moves over the years. I really do wish I still had it. It was so beautiful. It was ivory silk with dark red embroidered flowers. It was much too small for me, but I would proudly display it if I still had it.

What a beautiful memory, although it’s sad too. What a waist that we don’t keep things like that hey.
Wow! What a stunning dress! And you look gorgeous in it.

How smart of you to style a kimono dress! I don’t see a lot of people wearing kimonos out and about. It’s such a shame that your grandmother’s silk kimono wasn’t preserved, I’ll bet it was beautiful. Have a great weekend!
Author
Yes it was! Thanks Kim, have a great weekend!
Nancy,
I love your kimono dress!
I love wearing kimonos in the summer as an extra layer to cover up my arms when it’s chilly at night.
Such a great look my friend!

That’s a good way to wear them too! Thanks Robin!
This dress is a beautiful flattering style and print on you! So lovely to hear your grandmother’s story as your inspiration for this outfit. It is so true that the kimono style is very popular in the US. It is used as a topper of muted to bright floral pattern over everything and in many lengths!
Author
I see it a lot worn over shorts! That looks always very good! Thanks Di.

This dress is beautiful! And that is so interesting about not seeing kimonos much in your part of the world. Kimonos make up a big chunk of my closet…lol!

I’m loving your monochrome kimono dress, Nancy, and the black and gold tone jewellery and rose gold sandals are the perfect accessories. I don’t think kimonos are much worn in Belgium either. I wonder why that is? xxx
Author
I don’t know! In Europe they aren’t not popular. Have no idea why not!
Kimonos can be translated in so many ways because they’re so damn beautiful (and flattering). Love this black and white interpretation on you!

Such a pretty dress!! That’s so interesting that the kimono style isn’t really worn in the Netherlands. I love learning fashion-related cultural differences like that!

I adore kimono styles (and obis, for that matter), and this dress is no exception. Lovely print and style on you, Nancy. That is a shame that your grandmother’s dress wasn’t saved.
Thank you so much for the link-up – have a fabulous weekend!

Yes it was. Thanks Sheila. I appreciate your comment very much as I know you are having a hard time now and something else on your mind.
I love your kimono dress look, Nancy! I had a “real” Japanese kimono, too, but seem to have lost it over the years. Darn. Cute shoes and accessories, too! Have a great weekend, my friend.

Your dress is lovely . I must admit having visited Japan and seen the real thing most of what is worn in the Western world bears no resemblence to the real thing. Many thanks for hosting.
Author
Indeed! I still can remember that one from Japan. It was embroided and silk of course.
That dress is so pretty on you! I love the classic black and white!

Hi Nancy
I love the kimono style and just bought a new one yesterday! I do plan to wear it with shorts as the weather here is so hot and humid anything else is just miserable!
You look great in this dress! I’ll be interested to read a little more about the history of kimonos!

But you can wear a legging underneath to create length! It would be a waste to not wear it!

Isn’t that fun to know? It makes complete sense that some trends would be more popular in one place over another. I guess I just didn’t think about it. Your kimono dress is so pretty and very flattering on you!

I love the style of this dress Nancy! The black and white print is very striking. It’s quite difficult to find kimonos here in the UK too – I keep looking on eBay for a long one. Thanks for linking up!
