I’ve never worn a vest before. So how to style a vest I asked myself. I remember that vests were very fashionable when I was about 14 years old. Those pink and blue short ones, although I actually call that more body warmers. But I didn’t like it back then either. Well, vests here in the Netherlands are not really stylish, while I see them a lot with my overseas fashion friends. Here I compare them more with kitchen aprons. But the fashion blood goes where it can’t crawl and I decided to give the vest a try. I choose black because that is the easiest color for me to combine.
How to style a vest
I wanted to wear it with a black long dress, but I chose a less obvious outfit. You’ve already seen these trousers here. And I wanted to style it with purple and pink. Because there is also pink in the check print of the trousers. I have to say that I have to get used to wearing a vest. I think I feel more comfortable wearing it with black. For example, on black ankle pants with ankle boots. Or on that black dress. But I actually like this vest! With a pair of brooches or a striking belt and lots of accessories on a black outfit.
A black vest with purple, pink and plaid
At least I wanted to wear my beloved lilac boots under these trousers when I started styling this vest. And I wanted to wear a bright color. I choose this bright pink sweater with sequins. I have added a thin lilac belt but actually in retrospect I think it should have been a wider belt. The purple flower pin, the lilac ring and the pink bracelets give the outfit even more color. And my nails are painted in 4 shades of purple! I kept the earrings just golden. I think the colors all go well together. Many different colors but from one pallet. So, how to style a vest? In many different ways, but here with a lot of color. You will undoubtedly also see the black version of styling soon. And if you have any other ideas of how to style a vest, just let me know! I know that Jodie does great styling with vests!
I just adore this Nancy . I think you look amazing in this, especially with the belt and boots.

I know it all about the vest this week, but can I just say how much I love those trousers? Adorable pink (not silver) lining there!

This is a super fun and interesting outfit, Nancy! I love the color palette that you chose as it pops against the black of the vest. I find vests difficult to style as well because my shoulders are very broad. I feel like a vest accentuates that. But I do wear them and I prefer the longer ones like yours. In fact, I had hunted for a long black vest like this one for about 3 years and never found one in my size and budget. So I eventually gave it up. I do like the long vests over dresses! Thanks for sharing your fun styling and linking up with me.

This was a cheap one from Boohoo.com. I am going to wear it over a dress too!
I mostly wear vests in the winter but have a couple that are lighter weight for summer and fall. I have one long vest that I should try to style: belting it is probably a great solution.

Yes but then with a wider belt! Thanks Mireille!
I am usually not a vest fan, but this outfit looks fabulous!

Thank you very much.
I like vests, but haven’t worn one in decades. I know they’re having a “moment” right now–I may just stick to a standard denim vest, though. I love all of the bright colors you’ve decided to add, it gives the outfit so much life.

Thanks Kim. Here in Europe you hardly see women wear vests.
I have only one vest, which is a Welsh wool one gifted to me be a fellow blogger. It’s not as long a yours, though, and I’m always wearing it over a dress. I can see how this longer black vest can be a versatile piece, and I would probably wear it over a long, flowing dress. But I do love how you styled it with those checked trousers and I love the pops of pink and purple, especially that giant purple flower corsage! xxx

I still have to try to wear it over a dress! I love those flower corsages, you have them too! They add just that little special don’t you think!
You make me laugh, Nancy! I don’t think your vest looks like a kitchen apron at all! You look very fashionable!

Oh, we totally matched! I love long vests, but haven’t really seen them around very much lately. The short vests look very 90s to me.
Love your sparkly sweater! Take care, Nancy!

Funny hey! Thanks Sheila!
SO much I love about this outfit… first off… that bright pink top and those BOOTS match it so perfectly along with that purple flower! I love the vest with the belt! I have a blush pink vest that I always forget about in my closet and you’ve reminded me to get it out.

Thanks Carrie! Yes, get it out! haha, enjoy your Easter weekend!
Vests are hard to style! The issue I have is that they are often pretty formless – you’ve addressed that issue by incorporating a belt – and when you are only 5’2” formless isn’t a great look. I require vests to be a bit more tailored, and tailored vests are rare. I love the colors in this outfit! Black, pink, and purple – perfect!

I agree, I think they need a upgrade in the form of belts or brooches!
