Life is all about standing out in a crowd, but New York City is just too cool for outsiders not to want to fit in with its natives. Whether you are planning on moving to NYC, visiting, or you simply want to feel a New Yorker for a day, here are some inspiring tips that will help you look like you belong in one of the most fashionable and iconic cities in the world.
This post is written by Claire, who has been in New York for the past two months.
Black is the only color

While New Yorkers may have some of the most colorful personalities in the world, black is their uniform. Whether you are imitating an off-duty model or trying to blend in with the students in Washington Square Park, you can’t go wrong with a classic black leather jacket – perfectly fitted, of course. However, to truly make people believe that you belong there, you need to combine those sharp, sleek clothes with an equally sharp attitude. New Yorkers want to be left alone while they are doing their daily catwalk to work, and confidence and those famous standoff sighs are key. If you nail that perfectly edgy personality, your clothes will speak for themselves.
Uptown girls
On the other side of Downtown cool, Uptown princesses rule. If you want to pull off that high-society, Blair Waldorf look, try going for something a bit more classic. Opt for pearl earrings, collared shirts (or collared anything) and accent it with an it-bag. No New Yorker is complete without that one special bag that shows off their status. To complete the look, you are going to need sunglasses. Whether it is raining or the sun is shining, whether you are cool or preppy, you’re not a New Yorker without some shades.
Cocktails are always in style

Even if you don’t actually live in Manhattan, you can still party like a New Yorker. And throw a house party that is on par with New York’s infamous loft parties. Invite people by “word-of-mouth”. Tell your friends to bring their friends. Tell your neighbors to come on up as well. Although in New York it isn’t too cool to be friendly with your neighbors, making people feel included might keep them from complaining about the noise. Experienced New Yorkers know that having red wine at a house party isn’t a great idea because people walk around and spills are bound to happen. So opt for cocktails instead. Cocktails are fun and you can always hire a professional mixologist in NYC that will have drink recipes more elaborate than entire meals which are sure to impress any guest. Try to look for some wherever in the world you may be, and spice up your party like a true Manhattan native.
Perfect hair is so New York
Photo by Igor Rand on Unsplash
A great number of New Yorkers may be covered in designer brands, but every New Yorker is flaunting perfectly polished and blown out hair. Regardless if they are about to jump into a town car on the Upper East Side or waiting for a subway in the Village, every New York City girl will know exactly where the best hair salons are. To be New York chic, you need to keep your look sleek and glossy. And visit your hair stylist often for a regular trim. If you haven’t had the time to blow out your hair and it’s dirty, try not to put it up in a high, bouncy ponytail like a cheerleader. Low ponytails with plain, hair-colored elastic bands are always the more fashionable option.
New Yorkers are so effortless at being cool, they can leave anybody feeling basic. Hopefully, our guide can help put you on the fast track to looking, dressing and partying like a New Yorker so that you can upgrade your status from visitor to native.

I also only love the black part! Haha, I am not a city gal anymore!
I noticed when I went to NYC that the code was black and other neutrals. Luckily that was how I packed. I think that has transferred to London due to the number of people who travel so much between the two cities thanks for linking with muttonstyle Monday
