I hardly ever wear neutrals. Not that I don’t like it. For example, I think neutrals look fabulous on Laurie. She wears it with such elegance too. But I don’t think it looks very good on me. I am a high contrast autumn type. I also learned it from a pro! But what high contrast mean for your use of color, apart from the fact that the autumn colors suit me very well.
I need a high contrast in my face or outfit
A high contrast type does need some strong colors. Not only am I a high contrast autumn type, also muted colors work best for me. For example, a soft color lipstick will only look good on me if I have a smokey eye and my face is heavily tinted! And I really need a good amount of color on my lips when I wear few different colors. So I can wear these neutrals, but then I need some makeup. A strong color on my lips, a bit of a smokey eye etc. A contrasting necklace. Also if I wear a monochrome look, I need some contrast.
I am wearing neutrals for a change
I bought these trousers last season and I wore them often, they are so soft as you can read here. Then I wore it with black. I can easily wear these trousers during spring, because I actually found them to thin for the winter. This neutral color combines very good with white. I hardly ever wear white, especially no white trousers or skirts. But I make an exception for these trousers. The top has great puff sleeves, I love a statement sleeve. And for the contrast, I wear a black statement necklace, close to the face. And a good strong and bold lipstick.
Try to work with contrasts yourself. Find out if you are a low or high contrast type and play with it. Nice to see what effect it has! For my Dutch readers I have a link to a site with a very clear explanation about contrast types. For my English-speaking readers I have a link here.
I would love it if you would share your outfits with #nancysfashionstyle and tag @nancysstyle! Thanks!

The trousers are a great shape and I love the statement sleeves. I am also a high contrast person, as a winter.
Author
Yes I think you are indeed! It’s good to know isn’t it! I like my wardrobe much better now that I ,,know,,my colors!
Love the trousers and pretty top, we all need neutrals as a base. You could add any of your Autumn colors in here for lots of different looks!

I think so too! Burgundy would be good. But I do like to wear the more darker colors! And this season I see a lot of brown! Yeah!
Puff sleeves are cute. And love Martina’s style. Great choice.
Author
Yes Martina always looks perfect!
Love this fabulous neutral look! The necklace is such an amazing accessory too. I love your explanation of why you need to wear high contrast shades. Thanks for the link up!

Thanks! I learned that from Pamela!
I know what you mean about wearing neutrals – I always think they look better on everyone else. I think I need more color near my face. I like what you did here with the necklace and love the sleeves on the blouse. Thanks for the link up!

Thank you very much!
I’m not much of a neutrals kinda gal, either, Nancy! Laurie always wear them so well, doesn’t she? You look absolutely fabulous in this look though. I would totally wear this – although my shoulders are already quite pointy, so I’m not sure if I could carry that top off lol!

Hi Nancy, love this outfit on you! You accessorized the neutrals so well, and make them work for you. Also, enjoyed this post about contrast very much. I generally gravitate toward color and contrast, but this week I posted a neutral outfit that is out of my usual-I don’t wear these colors very often, either. Enjoy your weekend and thanks for the link up!

Going to read your post! Thank you very much Di!

THanks Heather!
I do love that classic neutral look, but I don’t ever feel i’ve pulled it off. I hadn’t thought to add a statement necklace in a bright color. Though, come to think of it,I’m not sure I have any. A scarf it would have to be! I love this look on you…especially those sleeves! Thanks for the link up!
Author
A scarf will work just as perfect! Thanks Marsha!
I like the combination between the casual shoes and the more dressy top! A very well curated outfit!

Thank you very much!
I just picked up a light scarf with some neutral colors (I paid $2!) and it has me inspired to wear some neutral outfits next week. I go back and forth between what I feel like wearing but with fall coming, I know I will reach for more neutrals. I love this statement blouse and adding the necklace was a good way to add a color closer to your face.

Thanks Mireille. But that is the fun thing about clothes, we just can wear what we feel like! Not just dark colors or just neutrals! Just depending on what mood we are right?
I’m an Autumn type myself, and hardly ever wear neutrals or even pastel as I don’t think they suit me at all.
I think you can get away with this outfit because of that stunning statement sleeve blouse and black statement necklace, but I still think stronger colours suit you better than neutrals … xxx
Author
I totally agree, I also am a Autumn type. But sometimes , especially in summer when I have a teint, I wear lighter colors for a change. Just for a day.
I love your analysis of how to style color on you, like this neutral outfit. It really works for you with your smokey eye and red lip, Nancy! That top is super cute, and of course, I adore those tan trousers. Great outfit and kudos for trying something new and different!

You look fantastic and giving me all the Trinny vibes in the most complimentary ways – I love Trinny! Have a great weekend xx
Author
Oh yes, I love Trinny too! She is so inspiring!
I LOVE the puffy sleeves on that top, and I’m swooning over that white blazer, Nancy! I used to “pooh-pooh” neutrals until I did a year-long challenge in 2012 and included two full months of nothing but neutrals in my capsules – it hugely helped me understand the value of neutrals and what I liked. Which was high-contrast! I do not like “blerg” shades like beige or grey, but I love browns, caramels, black, white, cream. I’m a huge fan of black and white together, and this side of my wardrobe has started to expand.
Thanks so much for the link-party, my dear friend! I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Nancy, this is a lovely look on you. I also prefer to wear strong colors but lighter tones every once in while is a nice change of pace. I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

I agree, sometimes it’s nice to wear a total different look. I think you always look so cool in black!
So, you need to start wearing neutrals more often. YOU look smashing!! Love that puffy sleeved top. And the balance of the white tennies with the white top. Adorable. Your legs look about a mile long. Hubba hubba.
Author
Haha, thanks Leslie. I like neutrals but just not on me. I am not the type to wear neutrals.
That’s funny, I almost exclusively wear neutrals, and I’d totally wear this outfit! It looks great on you, especially those statement sleeves!

I’m like you Nancy. I don’t wear neutrals much either, but I’m trying to push myself into incorporating them more. Just because I feel like I ask others to move out of their comfort zone, so I should too.
