Black and navy are actually very chic when worn together. It used to be a nogo when there was something as fashionrules! Luckily we don’t have that anymore and we can wear whatever we feel like. Still, I hardly ever wear or wore it. Maybe because I never styled the right materials together. The right fabrics. Because it looks best in my eyes when the navy item stands out a bit more than the black one. I will explain.
* I was featured on Big Earrings. It’s a site that sells, well you guessed it, big earrings! Fabulous ones! I hope you take a look at the post Sharon wrote about me.
Can navy and black look chic together?
I have tried it. Navy cotton trousers with a black cotton sweater. Terribly boring. Even with the necessary accessories I could not make it fun. The trick is to make the navy item, in this case the skirt, stand out. And you do that by means of a shiny fabric. So that the navy gets a chic look and also stands out more than the black. The black may then fade into the background a bit.
Now I think it looks very nice together. Two completely different fabrics, one more shiny than the other. I have already shown this skirt several times, I just think it is very beautiful, but actually too cold for the winter.
How I wear navy and black
I like the top with balloon sleeves so much, I really love these kind of sleeves and they are in a lot of spring collections to be seen. I didn’t want to wear too much gold with this outfit, so I chose the nice chunky necklace. And my favorite earrings and watch. These boots are the perfect ones to wear with this outfit. The skirt has to hang over the boots. Ankle boots would look dull under this skirt. (However Jodie showed me a outfit with a pleated skirt and ankle boots that looked cool)
Sandals would look great when the weather is warm enough! It takes to long don’t you think! I want to wear sandals and get rid of my tights! I like to wear this belt on a outfit like this. Because it accentuates and brightens the chic appearance of this outfit.
Do you ever wear navy and black together?

Such a gorgeous skirt! I agree, I used to be scared of navy and black together but like the “blue and green should never be seen” rule I think it works so nicely, as you’ve shown here navy and black really work!
Thanks for the link up 🙂
Hope you are having a good week 🙂

Oh yes, I love blue and green together! Thankks Mica!
I think it depends on the shade of navy, yours is perfect to wear with black, especially the way you’ve styled this outfit! Totally love it! I only have one navy blouse but it is very dark and I wouldn’t wear it with black.

No I can understand that, the navy really has to stand out, Thanks Carmen.
Nancy, I don’t think I really have worn the two together because, outside of jeans, I don’t really own too much navy. Your outfit looks stunning so It’s something that I’m going to keep in the back of my mind.

Oh that is great! Thanks Terri!
I love this skirt Nancy. You did a good job. Black and Navy is amazing together, I like it. You look gorgeous.

I would have never considered wearing navy and black together, but I love this outfit. I think you’re right about the navy fabric being shiny, which brightens it. The puff sleeves on your sweater are awesome.

Black and navy is a difficult one to get right – you’ve hit the nail on the head by saying the navy needs to stand out more. Love your billowy navy skirt, the fabric is lovely.
Author
Thanks, yes it is a gorgeous skirt, but very thin. So I am glad we are heading to some warmer weather!
This is very chic and I love the balloon sleeves too! That skirt looks like you could twirl the night away in it; it is so pretty! Have a great weekend Nancy!

I’m a huge lover of puffy sleeves and floaty skirts too. The colours go well together Nancy. It’s a great look xx

Thanks Laurie!
I love the colour combo on you, and especially love the twirly skirt, but for me navy is an absolute no, as it drains all colour away from me. However, I have just bought a royal blue and black coat so I think wearing blue and black together depends on the intensity of the colours.
Have a great weekend and thanks for hosting 🙂

I think so too, royal blue and black is gorgeous! And very 80s! And don’t we love that!
The skirt is so pretty and flowy.

Oh wow, Nancy, this outfit is one of my favorite ones ever that you have shared! I love the navy silky skirt and I agree that the shiny fabric really makes a greater impact paired with black. Your sweater and all of your accessories work so perfectly together. I really like your wide leather belt with this skirt, too. I need to find a belt like that one. And how cool that you were featured on Big Earrings! I just checked it out and left a comment there as well! Have a marvelous weekend!

The mix of navy and black is really growing on me, so much more up to date than using a strong blue. So many great points to this outfit. I think a belt is an essential part acknowledging the joining of separates, necklace and sleeves all really strong touches. Altogether a great success!

Absolutely! I adore the combo of navy and black. Your outfit is fabulous example of how those two colors can look so marvelous together. You’ve created just the right balance and you look great. In my 21 in’21 post I’m also showing blue paired with black as I’ve got on a pair of dark denim jeans and a black/white striped jacket.

Lovely outfit Nancy! Yes I’ve always thought black and navy to be difficult to pair as they’re both such dark colours but your flowy skirt and puffy balloon sleeves add so much fun and lightness to the outfit x

Thanks JC, I am glad you like it!
I love black and navy together—even though they’re both neutrals, it just seems so daring! Love the shimmery quality of your skirt, too!

I never used to wear navy and black together but I have done for the past few years. Actually, I never liked to wear navy at all, until I was in my late 30s. I don’t know, I just felt like it didn’t suit me when I was younger.
You look absolutely gorgeous, Nancy. I love everything about this outfit, and how you styled it. It’s utter perfection in every way!

This is such an elegant outfit, Nancy! I love the balloon sleeves on the top, and you are so right to mix different textures to make the black and navy each look distinct. Agreed on the tall boots with a long skirt.
