I have such a strong opinion about. Coastal grandmother style, just the name alone. And it’s a trend! Unbelieveable. The trendsetters must be very demotivated. Last Monday we as a Stylish Monday group also had this theme and then we called it Coastal Chic, because the opinions about coastal grandmother style were divided. At first I wanted to put on a black outfit for the series, rebellious and unconventional. But I thought I should at least do my best, as so did my fashion friends.
What my opinion is about coastal grandmother style!
And when we started photographing this outfit I thought, I’m going to write a post about the coastal grandmother style. Not because I actually like the style, but because I dislike it so much! Let me make it very clear that what I write is my opinion and that I am absolutely not saying that anything is so. I appreciate every ones opinion. And as you could see, my fashion friends look great in this trend.
But who invented this trend anyway. And to give it such a terribly unattractive name. As if women of a certain age are grandmothers anyway. To assume that every woman will have children! That’s what hates me so much about this trend, somehow I loathe it.
And it’s also a very boring trend
But it’s not just the name. Let’s take a look at what a coastal grandmother supposily wears. I would have liked it much more if this trend had been with, for example, a flower dress and a straw hat. But this! Under the coastal grandmother style is meant, neutrals, relaxed, doing what you like, that kind of nonsense. Like you only do that when you’re older. But let’s stick to the style. As I interpreted it anyway.
What’s nice about this outfit? Can it be more boring than jeans? Most of you know how I feel about jeans. But it get’s even more boring! The t-shirt is of course striped to get a bit of a coastal feel, fine t-shirt, when worne on a floral skirt for example, but very boring when I wear it with jeans. Then another item that everyone raves about but that doesn’t make me wild: the white blouse!
Ban the coastal grandmother style!
How often do you read that the white blouse is the must-have item in your closet! And yes, as you can see I fell for it once. So boring! If you want to wear a white blouse, then at least buy one with great puff sleeves or super nice cuffs or something like that. But an ordinary white blouse? What’s there to like?
I wear shell bracelets and some turquoise accessories to spice it up a bit. I really like the sliders. But all in all, this look makes me feel like I’m part of an incontinence product commercial on the Dutch telly anyway. Or that the only thing I do is to drink my cup of tea and work a bit in my garden.
Incredibly boring and not at all representative of what a grandmother looks like these days! Or an older woman, which even sounds so retarded at all. What is an older woman? It’s just a woman! What does age matter again? Only on Tinder does that matter! And from what I know about that, that’s also completely out of reality. I hope this trend will go away soon because it really annoys me.
I would really appreciate it if you would follow me on Instagram.
My favourite of last week is: Sheila of Ephemera

I hate it Tina! Lol.
I agree with you Nancy! I hate the assumption that older women are automatically grandmothers, as if that’s our only identity. There’s nothing wrong with the coastal chic style but it doesn’t set the bar very high. Maybe it’s a sign after lockdown that we want a more relaxed way of dressing.

I think alot of what’s happening now is blamed on Covid. Let’s just move on right!
I hate this new trend word too! I do love a good white blouse though! I love your classic so-comfortable-looking outfit though Nancy.xx

Haha, thanks Laurie!
Haha Nancy you made me smile today. You put into words my feeling exactly.

Thanks!!
I have no idea why the name is what it is – or where the term mom jeans came from some years ago either. So weird! I think many of us feel the same way and I feel like the trend should be more aptly named coastal chic. That better suits the style.
This was fun to read Nancy and you made me laugh today – thank you! I hope you have a wonderful weekend my friend!

I totally agree with you Nancy! It’s a boring look and it assumes too much. I don’t mind the loose neutral pants or jeans but I absolutely hate striped tops. Last year on the Suffolk coast where we stayed every single clothes shop had a huge number of these dreadful tops!
Give me a black jeans, studded boots goth look any time! Says a grandma!
Author
But you are the coolest grandma I know!!
Haha well the name is silly and it’s very limiting. Much as I love loose linen pants for Summer I like navy or black as a base worn with sharp pinks blues and white of course. And if only we had the climate to wear them more often! I adore being a grandmother but I don’t want it to define the way I dress!!

Indeed Pamela! Thank you very much!
You are cracking me up Nancy with your opinion on this style! I agree as well. I didn’t really think about the name and how it insinuates having children. Thanks for making me aware of that. I don’t like that it also insinuates that grandmothers dress very boring and without thought. Love seeing you in jeans though! Thanks for the link up!

This is such a good post! I don’t like the name of this trend or what it implies either. I do like an outfit with a coastal vibe though. Those jeans are fabulous on you! Have a wonderful weekend!

I think that coastal grandmother is the worst name for this trend! Why couldn’t it have been coastal casual? Doesn’t that have a nicer ring to it? Nevertheless, I like your interpretation of it! Very put together and casual!
Author
Thank you very much Laura!
LOL. Please tell us how you really feel… HAHA! I get what you are saying about the style and the name and I know that you love color and texture and pizazz but I personally love the coastal grandmother style; even if I rarely wear it… but I do have dreams of owning a house near the coast one day and decorating all in neutrals with touches of seafoam, green, and blue all around.
Author
And you live in the most gorgeous place! Haha, thanks Joanne!
Come on, Nancy, tell us how you really feel! Haha. For those for whom this is legitimately their style, more power to them. But to jump on it just because it’s a trend…if it’s not authentic to your personality, it’s just not going to work for you (even if it looks OK to others). and yes the naming of this trend is absolutely ridiculous!
Author
Indeed Sally! I think that if you wear this style always because you just love it or because it’s practical, that’s very fine with me. I mean who am I. But to make it a trend and then name it CGS is just insulting.
Loving your laid-back chic look, Nancy. And you know that I hate this CG term too- what does it even mean??!!
Author
Indeed! So stupid! Thanks Lucy!
I also prefer coastal chic! You look fabulous and I love the stripes! Happy Friday!

Nancy, I am totally with you on the condescending name of this trend! Coastal casual or coastal chic is much better. I think the wardrobe basics of a laid back coastal lifestyle are nice, and can be worn creatively and look great on some people. You know I love my stripes-I can go with that part of the trend! I like your inspired take on it, but I know it’s not your style!
Author
Indeed! Thank you very much Di!
Haha, Nancy! So glad I’m not the only one who wants to ban this trend and, more particularly, its silly name!
Sharing your opinion about white shirts too 🙂 xxx
Author
I am glad you do, never understood what is so stunning about that!
You made me laugh! That is what I like about fashion: we all have our preferences and dislikes about what we like to wear or not and about what others wear. I actually photographed several outfits in the coastal chic (I like that name better) style today for an August blog post. I like the neutrals especially in summer and they make me thing of the beach.

Indeed, that name is much better! Thanks Mireille!
Nancy, I was laughing out loud reading your opinion about being a “Coastal Grandmother”! Really funny. When I read you say, jeans…boring. White shirt…boring. I was cracking up! But so true not every older lady is a grandmother. I do think you look great in jeans though and i love those slides!
Enjoy your weekend!

You crack me up Nancy, but I’m on your team on everything. We need to start our own fabulous grandma trend (even though we aren’t grandmas!!)

Exactly! We should start the trend: Women who are over 50 and have no children oh what a shame trend!
I agree that not every older woman is a grandmother. I happen to be a 72-year-old grandmother who lives on the Atlantic coast in Savannah, Georgia. It gets so hot and humid here in the summer that we wear lightweight cotton and linen clothing in loose-fitting, flowing styles simply to stay cool. I’m not at all impressed with the “coastal grandma” trend because it seems like the norm to me. You nailed it with your faded jeans, t-shirt, and white blouse.

I can’t believe that you did not do your research on this one….it was a term coined by a thirty something on TicToc and is all about the style on the Somethings Gotta Give movie. I suppose she thinks she discovered something new and the term she coined makes her famous….but laughing because if you did not know where it came from she is hardly famous. The name is awful but the classic style will always work for some people some of the time Because a rude thirty something posts an insulting term is not a reason to ditch the casual clothes
Author
Thank you for your comment. I know abut the movie but the term and the trend became popular by the TikTok influencer. Like I said this is my opnion. I think basic jeans and a plain white blouse as boring as hell.
Oh, Nancy! I love how much you hate this trend!!! This granny wears what she wants when she wants. Sometimes, I might look a bit like a coastal chic woman but not often. I think you look pretty fabulous even though you hate it which means you shouldn’t wear it! I loved the picture of you with the lawn mower!!! Thanks for the link up!

Haha, indeed! Wear what you want, I am all for that!
Hello Nancy. I found your blog through a comment you left on Leslie’s Once Upon a Time. It’s nice to “meet” you. I must say I learned something about you on my very first visit–you have strong opinions about Coastal Grandmother Style. I hate that name too and the assumptions it makes. That said, I don’t mind a basic (what some may call boring) look on occasion. I don’t live anywhere near the coast, but do own jeans and a striped t-shirt. At the moment, I don’t believe I have a plain white blouse. Since I’m not even sure on that point without looking, I obviously don’t pay enough attention to my wardrobe. I just retired from an office job, so it may be time to revamp my wardrobe to match my change in lifestyle.
Author
How nice of you to comment! Thank you. If you are not happy with your wardrobe you definitely should. Such a waist of time to dress in clothes that don’t make you feel fabulous!
I think this is one of the most interesting looks ever! Just love it.
Anyways, just read your comment on my blog and wanted to get back right away. Was wondering if you got a tiktok account?
I can totally related to you being frustrated with all the videos you have been posting and the effort not really paying off. Drop by should you hop over to tiktok to give it a try.
Happy Sunday

I really hope you are not serious about the most interesting looks ever…..I am not sure I like TikTok at all, I just like static photos. Thanks Sabina.
Oh my goodness, Nancy, I am laughing so hard that you think you look like a woman for Dutch incontinence commercial! You don’t look like that. But then again, maybe you kind of do! Haha. While I really like this cute casual outfit on you, I agree that it is definitely not your style! You just don’t look like the Nancy I know and love in this look. I think you should have done Coastal Grandmother your way in a black or floral dress!

Haha, yes indeed, but then it wouldn’t show of this stupid trend. Thanks love!
OMG, Nancy, you really made me laugh! You never look ordinary – even in jeans, t-shirt, and white blouse. (And by the way, I’m with you on the white blouse – boring – unless you can accessorize it into not boring.) You look quite lovely in your coastal chic outfit. But I agree it is far from from your usual style.
Still giggling at how much you hate this style. 🤣

Haha, yeah I really do!
Holy smokes, it’s me! Thanks so much for featuring me, Nancy!
I’m with most of your readers and you: not a fan of the name either! I’m not a grandmother, never wanted children, and I don’t look like anyone’s granny. I also find jeans, white striped top and white shirt SO DULL…for me. For lots of people, it’s plenty, and good for them. But for me – if you ever catch me in this, I’ll give you $5.00, ha ha. I own a white shirt, but only because it’s good for layering.
Author
Haha, glad we tink alike on that one!
As someone who’s a big fan of the Coastal Grandmother look, I agree that Coastal Chic sounds much better, especially for people our age 🙂 I think the style suits you too!

Oh Thank you! I appreciate that a lot!
Oh Nancy you made me laugh! I love your total honesty and no nonsense approach. I do like your outfit but the trend is not for me, I don’t do neutrals. I will only consider wearing white if it includes some nice details.
