Oh I always hate the first months of the new year. Bittersweet memories, holidays are over, the dullness, the grey weather, the freezing cold. I can always get so sad when something has been really fun, like the holidays, and then it’s over. As if there will never be any more fun times. While the reality is of course that you have to create your own fun and it is certainly not dependent on holidays or the like. In addition, I think that every day is a party.
Bittersweet memories

I have bittersweet memories of when I was a 11 year old girl I went to play with a friend and she had a horse. And we went riding on that horse, and I loved it. It was a older horse and she listened very well and was very sweet. I had a amazing afternoon because I loved horses.
When I was having dinner with my parents and sister in the evening, I had to cry because I had had such a nice day. My parents told me not to act like that. When I think back about it, tears well up in my eyes. I can still remember that feeling so well. The feeling of getting so emotional when something good is over.
Let’s talk more about the outfit to keep things light, lol.
My first velevet item….not….my memory fails me

I’ve never been fond of velvet, always found it a bit musty. But I wanted to give this skirt a chance. I thought: velvet would be nice for Christmas. Well, I didn’t wear this skirt for Christmas. By the way, I didn’t know velvet was so static. Gosh, I’ll keep brushing. And with long haired cats in our home it’s not ideal. And while writing this post I remebered this skirt…....so this isn’t my very first velvet at all……
I am wearing a lovely sweater on it, with a v-neck that I love, in a nice casual way, not to styled. A cool belt and gun metal bracelet from S. Deer to neutralize the mustiness of the velvet. And a cute black necklace with a bow. My biker boots, which were in the giveaway bag, but I just can’t part with them. They really need to be patched up at the cobbler. But tell me, what bittersweet memories do you have?

Lovely skirt. I’m very keen on velvet, it’s sumptuous and warm. Nicely styled with some edge.

That would be lovely, I’ll bet there are some stories to tell! Thanks Gail!
That skirt is so gorgeous! Love the velvet!

Oh, what a memory of your special day with that friend and her horse! You are so right, I sometimes feel like that on Christmas. Bittersweet!
I really like your outfit but understand the challenges of velvet! Have a great weekend!

Yeah, I felt like that this Christmas too. First one without my dad. You know how that feels. Thanks Kellyann.
Thanks for sharing your memory and loving this cool look! I have bittersweet memories of a special place in Florida. It was a private island that had shells everywhere. So much peace! Thanks for the link up Nancy!

Nancy, that is so sad. I used to go to a friends who had a horse and her mum always said, i was so quiet. She wasnt sure if I had had a good time or not. I was very shy. I love your outfit right down to the boots of course, and have a love of velvet at christimas too, in the form of trousers and jeans.
Author
Thank you very much Annemarie. I was also very shy, or more insecure I think.
I always get the post holiday blues, not necessarily because the holidays are over but because it’s so cold and dreary outside. Your velvet skirt looks so luxe! Love the edgy vibes to this look!

Sweet childhood memory, Gail. I always get a little sad when good things come to an end, too. Love your outfit, your velvet skirt is a gorgeous, but I get it that velvet can be a little high maintenance to wear. The nappy-ness is a magnet for thing like pet hair! Hope you enjoy your weekend and thanks for the link up!

I get it Nancy! I am not a fan of the Winter months and actually Jan is my least favorite. We have many a number of plans in Feb to look forward to going out. Love your skirt and the black and grey combo. So sweet you have memories of your friend and riding a horse.
Have a great weekend!

I find it hard to remember how I felt about a certain happening, but I do remember how free I felt when I passed my driving test. It vaguely comes back to me every once in a while. Love velvet too. I had a long skirt that I loved pairing different tops with. It always looked good. Have a super weekend my friend. Jacqui x

Oh yes, I was so happy, it was my second time and I loved to drive a car. Still do!
I have 2 velvet skirts and one pair of joggers: I don’t wear them very often but at least once or twice in winter. Since it is a classic fabric, I don’t think it really goes out of style especially when you do something like you did with the biker’s boots! Those are a neat pair of boots!

Thanks Mireille, yes they are. And I already had them in the give away pile!
I know that feeling with velvet, hahaha. Exactly why I LOVE faux leather especially with pets. But it is beautiful

Haha, yes that is better…..not if you have a white sofa though.
Oh I just LOVE velvet! That skirt is fabulous… but I completely agree that pets and velvet do not go well together.
Author
Haha, I did not even realize that before! Thanks Joanne.
I love the velvet skirt but I can imagine how cat hair would cling to it! I used to have a golden labrador and all my black clothes were covered in his hair! Holidays always hold bittersweet memories for me because I never want to come, well only to see my cat!

Thank you for sharing your memory and I love this look! I get a little bit sad this time of year, because it’s so cold and grey here. I try to do something every day that brings me joy and I go to the gym every day. I hope that you find some joy this weekend and enjoy it! Xo

Yes working out does help right? And a walk in nature too!
Yes, you are so right about this time of year. There’s such a letdown. But, like you said, let’s talk about your outfit! I love those boots. I say you should take them to the cobbler. They are just fabulous! I haven’t ever had a velvet skirt, but I can see how it would be a pain to take care of. I do love all your black accessories, Nancy!
Thanks for the link party!

Oh, I do love velvet!
I don’t love January though, I’m always glad when it’s over. Spring still seems such a long way off.
I do totally get you being emotional after having had such a nice day. What a pity your parents didn’t understand. xxx
Author
Yeah, I know….. Well January is almost gone! Have a great week Ann!
There is something about velvet that just makes you feel luxurious! This skirt is a beautiful piece and I love how you’ve styled it here. I also don’t think there is anything wrong with having happy tears after a great day. =)
I hope you are having a great week so far!

Beautiful skirt, Nancy. Love it. Thanks so much for hosting.

Thanks Claire, my pleasure!
Lovely skirt – I too am not sure about velvet – it crumples and creases so quickly. I have definitely had the blues throughout January as it’s been so damp and grey and I have that cough. Better days are coming and I’ve booked to go to Dungeness in March yay!.
Author
Oh that is fantastic Penny! I totally love Dungeness now!
Amen about creating your own memories. Looking very nice. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.

I’ll never forget trying to describe what bittersweet is to my oldest daughter when she was 4! I’ll bet she would tell you her trip was bittersweet because she had so much fun but was excited to get home as well. Thanks for sharing your memories!
Author
Ah, that is so sweet! My pleasure Laura!
I think it’s so sweet that you got so emotional over a wonderful day with your friend as a child, Nancy. I’m always getting emotional over, well, pretty much everything lol! There’s nothing wrong with being an emotional soul!
I’ve always loved velvet, that and lace. I just think it’s a sumptuous fabric, however, I have cats too so it’s not always the most practical! I don’t think I could wear a velvet skirt in my house. It would be absolutely covered in hairs lol! You look great though!

No indeed there is nothing wrong with being a bit emotional. We have two long haired cats so it’s not my best skirt….lol
Ooh, Nancy, even though you don’t love velvet, this skirt looks amazing on you! I love the way you styled it with biker boots, that super cool belt, and your cozy puffer coat. I honestly don’t think I get that sad when a fun time comes to an end. I enjoy the moments while they last and hold onto the fond memories, but I can’t really recall a time when sadness came with it. Maybe because I know the future holds all sorts of exciting things for us if we just embrace each moment and enjoy it to the fullest. Great post, my friend! Very thought provoking.

Can we truly enjoy the good times if we don’t also experience the hard times, Nancy? “Maybe time running out is a gift”…because then we learn to live in the moment and really appreciate what we have.
I love the velvet skirt, but yes, some velvets really attract hair! I prefer silk or viscose velvets – your skirt looks like a cotton velvet, which are the stiffest too. Get those boots fixed up! They are too cool!
Author
Living with a serious disease makes you live in the moment already. Yes I need to fix them up, they are really good!
What a lovely outfit. I particularly like the boots you have put with the skirt to toughen it up. You have the post holiday Blues Nancy… start planning something lovely. xxx

Haha, I will Hilda! Thanks.
