Why the waistcoat is not my ideal fashion choice

waistcoat on a dress

I’m just not a waistcoat woman. I’ve tried it several times now, but no, a waistcoat is just not for me. And it’s not that I don’t like it. I’ve tried it here with trousers, here on a lovely leopard print skirt, that was to tight and I gave it away and now I can’t find a good replacement!, and now again on this dress. Which, by the way, I wore this way for The Thrifty Six. I actually really like the waistcoat on the leopard print skirt. But it is the feeling that wearing a waistcoat gives me. Does this sound very strange?

Why I don’t like a waistcoat

For me, I think it is even more important how clothes make me feel than how they look on me. Of course, if a piece of clothing makes me feel very happy, I always like it. That’s not to say that it actually looks good, just that I think it looks good. I’ve never actually been a fan of the waistcoat. I often wore ties when I was a teenager, becuase I do love a androgynous look. I also tried adding a waistcoat back then, but no, I didn’t like it then either.

And now again, I would really like a fur one, it looks so good on a dress! But I’m sure I won’t wear it anyway because I don’t feel it. How does a waistcoat make me feel then? I don’t think I can explain it very well, because after all it is a feeling. But I think it’s too masculine, without any coolness. Because I like ties, but they are cool. And I think a waistcoat is too alternative or something, and in a completely unstylish way. There’s nothing wrong with alternative, but I don’t feel comfortable in it.

One last try…..yes it is really the last try

Did I explane that in a way that you understand me? Probably not, haha. Anyway, I wanted to show you this look because on one side I like it but I know how it made me feel. The dress is viscose and fabulous to wear. It feels so soft and no ironing needed! The shop where they sold this brand is bankrupt. So many good shops close down here in Holland, such a shame.

I am wearing a gun metal cuff, can you remember my gun metal ankle boots, loved those! And a pre loved necklace. Which I don’t wear actually, because I am a whiner when t comes to pre loved jewelry or shoes. I mean clothes I can wash. But a necklace…..I always think that there is something of the previous owner left on it……shall I stop talking…..yes.

So have you got the same feel with waistcoats? That feel, that, I am not sure, feel. To masculine, to alternative. Or have you long time ago embraced the trend?

I have one tan waistcoat and have worn it a couple of times. I actually have been looking for a thrifted black one. Not that I would wear it a lot, but I like the variety it can bring to my outfits.

Couldn’t agree more Nancy, how you feel is far more important than how it looks or how other people see you. Strangly enough I was gifted a pink quileted gilet a couple years ago at Christmas and it certainly wasn’t me. Two years later I discover that it’s warm comfortable and it goes with practically everything I have! So now I’ve bought another two and they’re so useful. So hang onto the waistcoat it may have it’s moment!

I understand what you’re saying Nancy and you are so right. It honestly comes down to how we feel rather than how we look. If we don’t feel amazing in something we won’t wear it often and then it just sits in the closet. I really like this look on you but only how you feel in it matters.
Good point about pre owned jewelry that I had never thought about it before!
    Thanks for the link up!

Hi Nancy, waistcoats and vests have been so popular lately, I see them everywhere! They can add interest and a versatile layer to an outfit. I love the way you styled this one over a dress, wearing it this way adds a feminine touch. I understand your point though, if you don’t love it, you are not going to feel good wearing it. Enjoy your weekend and thanks for sharing and hosting the link up party!

Nancy, I agree with you—I am not a big waistcoat person either. I keep trying them, but they just don’t work for me. And that’s ok! Also, thank you so much for the feature. I’m honored as always!

I definitely think you should try it for one cause. They are not as masculine and super fun.

Hi, Nancy – Despite what you think of waistcoats, this looks fantastic on you! Love the whole outfit. But as Marie Kondo says, “does it spark joy? If not, let it go.” I reached the overabundant point in my wardrobe and am now focusing on letting things go. Anyway, your look is awesome, as usual. XO – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

You’re totally right about the way clothes feel compared to how they look – I think this is why it’s so easy to have a full wardrobe and ‘ nothing to wear ‘. If something suits me,yet I can’t feel the love, it goes on my doomed pile; every so often I have a try on session, adding truly loved items and anything that still feels wrong has to go!

I have to agree with you, Nancy! I just don’t like them on me, either. I think you look fabulous as do so many other women (and men). But, I just don’t feel me in them. And, I really don’t get the whole puffer vest thing. When it’s cold enough to wear a puffer, it’s cold enough I want my arms covered! I’m like you…it takes a bit to realize and quit buying them! Thanks, my friend, for the link up!

    You look stunning in this.
That giraffe dress was made for you…
    and I love the waistcoat.
You may not love waistcoats but you know how to style them.

I like vests/waistcoats, always have, going back to the 80s, and I’ve worn them regardless of trends. So, I’m not with you on this, Nancy, but if you don’t like ’em, don’t wear ’em!

With vintage jewelry, you can always give it a wee scrub with a soft toothbrush and mild soap – that will get rid of any “ick factor” you might feel.

Thanks so much for the link-party!

I scrub them really good Sheila, but it doesn’t help, haha, it’s a mental thing.

I’m not much of a waistcoat girl either and actually I think I last wore one in my punk days. It was a waistcoat which had belonged to my granddad. It was actually too large for me, but I safety-pinned it to fit :-)) xxx

I think the waistcoat looks great over the leopard print dress, but you have to feel good in it too. I have some waistcoats and would probably buy more if I could find the right fit and colour. If the length is off they just don’t look right on me.

Nancy, I get it!! I’ve bought several waistcoats over the years, determined to make them work but they just don’t feel right! I actually bought one recently on Vinted to give it another go but I haven’t tried yet lol. What I do love though, is a soft woolly sleeveless jumper instead. I bought a brown one on Vinted and it’s become one of my favourite things!
