The modern uniform: denim, sneakers and effortless elegance

the modern uniform

I think it’s a nice name, the modern uniform. How many women wear jeans, a denim skirt, or dress with sneakers? It’s stylish, sporty, trendy, you name it. And what you wear on top really defines your style. I love a classic style, but with a touch of contrast. That’s why I love this outfit so much! Classic blouse, sporty sneakers. You might have seen the skirt before, but not the blouse. But first, let me tell you all about our vacation. And hold on tight, because the drama of misery continues here!

The drama continues

While we were so hoping for a relaxing vacation to recover from all the stress we’ve had over the past few months, that story was unfortunately cut short. On the first day of the vacation, I got sick. And not just a little bit, but with a real fever, a lot of coughing, and extremely short of breath. The second day was my birthday, and I had decided to celebrate it the week before. So I was completely miserable and tired at my party and even went to bed while I still had guests. Long story short, a course of antibiotics and prednisone later, and I started to recover a bit on the last weekend of the vacation.

In between, I also had cataract surgery. The simplest surgery, they say. Well, in my case, one eye didn’t quite work out. It’s truly unbelievable! Sometimes I get the feeling this kind of thing only happens to me. The other eye is healing well now, but I’ll have to go back and have something done about the other eye. So that was our vacation. I feel especially bad for Gerben. He’s taking on more and more caregiving responsibilities and really needs his rest. We’re hoping to take another week off towards the end of October and be able to get away for a few nights.

Back to the modern uniform. I prefer to wear this top with sneakers because I find it a bit too frumpy otherwise, like with sandals. But I really like the blouse, and as I said, this wrap skirt is definitely my favourite this summer. The blouse is a bit of a classic, a BB print with lovely daisies and a puff sleeve. I tucked one side in, but I am not sure it works well to be honest. A lot of blue accessories complement the look.

I think this was the last time for me to wear this outfit. Because it is getting colder quickly. It’s awful, by the way, that it’s suddenly getting dark so soon in the evenings and so cold in the mornings. I can never get used to that. I don’t like fall and winter. Is it just me, or have we really not had a great summer?

Oh Nancy, so sorry. Heal well and huge hugs. If it’s any consolation I do know how frustrating it is to have several health issues going on at the same time. And it spoiled your vacation too. And you are worried about Gerber. But you got better so I do hope the next vacation works well.

I too love to wear sneakers with skirts and dresses – it’s ever so slightly edgy. I also don’t do pretty or dainty shoes with clothes – far better to have trainers/sneakers! I love the skirt.

Loads of good wishes to you and Gerber X

I’m so sorry to hear about your vacation. That sounds incredibly stressful and miserable, and I’m so sorry you went through all of that, especially on your birthday. I really hope the recovery from the eye surgery goes better this time, and it’s so sweet that you’re worried about Gerben too. I hope you both get a much-needed, truly relaxing vacation in October because you really deserve it. On a lighter note, I love your “modern uniform” outfit. The mix of the classic blouse with the sporty sneakers is so chic.

I am so sorry to hear Nancy about your shortened vacation! That really sucks that you had eye issues too. Hoping you feel better soon and can take that needed break for you and Gergen. Love this denim look! The blouse is really pretty!

Nancy, what a bummer about your vacation. It’s awful to be sick on vacation and even worse when it’s your birthday. You deserve a do-over!
I like your modern uniform – anytime I can wear sneakers and look stylish I’m a fan! You would love the weather in FL, it’s warm and sunny all the time!

I’m sorry you got sick on your vacation and birthday; that really sucks. And you’re right, you’re the first person I’ve ever known to not have a positive cataract surgery. Sorry. Hopefully it’ll get fixed. I love your outfit. The skirt and sneakers are so cute together.

Lovely outfit. I’m sorry to hear about your illness woes though, it’s so depressing isn’t it? I feel like we had a good summer in the UK but it was too short. It started late and then is all of a sudden over.

I’m so sorry. Being sick during vacation is just not fair. I hope you are feeling better now.
Actually, I was glad that the summer wasn’t as hot as it could have been (seriously still bad enough for me, I’m so looking forward to fall weather) and I’m also enjoying the darkness. I guess I’m a vampire after all 😉
I don’t wear dresses outside of the houses often, but have had to wear sneakers with them simply because my feet can do ballerinas or sandals or heels anymore.

Oh Nancy, so sorry to hear you have been ill, spoiling your vacation and your birthday. I hope you and Gerben have the opportunity to take a relaxing vacation soon. You are looking well, and hope you are feeling better. I like your modern uniform. Denim is so on trend for fall, and your cute checked blouse and denim skirt are so good together. Hope you have a nice weekend and thanks for sharing and hosting the link up!

That’s such a shame about you getting sick on vacation and your birthday Nancy.
I’ve heard a lot of people have issues with cataract surgery…maybe they are doing it differently lately, because it used to be something that seemed so successful.

I don’t know what it is, but it’s a bummer. It will be fixed but it takes extra time and appointments. Not something I am looking forward too.

I really like the combination of the girly blouse with the sneakers! Cute outfit! I am so sorry your vacation time did not turn out well with you being sick and I hope you are feeling much better now. Here’s to hoping your October break will be better and that you both can relax and rest some between now and then.

I am so sorry to read about all the troubles you had on vacation and with your surgery! I once had a doctor call me a Jinx so it’s not just you that these weird things seem to happen to. My body often seems to react oddly to medicines and interventions and no one seems to know why. I certainly hope your next vacation is much more relaxing and restful.

I’m so sorry about your holiday being ruined by health problems and your cataract surgery not quite working out 🙁
I do hope things have settled by now and that you’ll be able to have a couple of relaxing days away later this year.
As for your outfit, I think it is gorgeous. I’m not really a fan of uniforms, modern or otherwise, but I do love a denim maxi skirt, and that blouse is a delight!
Sending hugs and well wishes xxx

Hi, Nancy – We never know if something might go wrong with a medical procedure that usually has good results. Like how I’ve had vaccinations my whole life but then my body had an inflammatory response from the Covid vaccine that gave me an infection that landed me in the hospital and I am still trying to overcome chronic pain and serious effects to this day. Or like how all my Dad’s friends had cataract surgery and could happily see better again, but when my Dad went to get his the doctor was late so the anesthetic had to be redone and ruined the outcome. He went back to get his eye muscle readjusted to correct the problem. So maybe 90% of the time things go well and perhaps 10% of the time someone has a problem. Sometimes that’s us, but not usually. It’s not just you; it’s some people sometimes and most of the time we’re all okay. Well, I hope you feel better and that your eye problem gets healed perfectly. Best of luck – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

I’m so sorry your birthday and vacation were ruined by you getting sick. That stinks. Mike had his cataract surgery done a few years ago, and he has a film over one (maybe both) eye. I keep telling him to go to the eye doctor to have it checked. But, he’d rather complain about it. It’s not uncommon for that film to happen. They just go in and zap it and it’s gone. I hope you’re able to have yours corrected soon. I hope your fall vacation goes much better! Thanks for the link up!

I think there is always a solution fr a eye problem after a cataract surgery, but it is such a hassle. But it’s not a film with me, we will see.

Oh Nancy, I knew you were feeling unwell and I knew you had to get cataract surgery, but I didn’t know how awful it all was! I am so sorry to hear this and will continue sending healing energy your way. This outfit is adorable and so totally you! I love your denim skirt and the cute gingham blouse and it all looks so great with sneakers, too. I look forward to our Zoom call next week!

Thanks so much for the link-party, Nancy! Sorry to hear your vacation was marred by your illness, and to have only one eye go well during your cataract surgery is so frustrating! Sending you good vibes!

Love your denim and blue outfit! I would not tuck that blouse in.
