I always think there’s something cool about a polo, but there is such a thing as polo perfection. And of course I don’t mean a polo with a polo player’s logo on it. That’s too posh for my style. And you know that I love contrast in an outfit. So a cool polo with a feminine skirt. I first wanted to say, yes, a skirt is always feminine. But that’s not the case these days anymore, haha, now I really sound like an old woman. I am…..
How to wear a polo to perfection?
A polo has always had a certain look. But of course it does depend on the material, the colour and the way you wear it. I mean, polo perfection is also when worn with a classic pair of trousers and expensive brogues. But that is not the perfection I am seeking for. The polo of course comes from the sport of polo, which dates back to the 19th century. The players tied a collar to their shirt and the buttons prevented the collar from flapping up and down while galloping. Funny right! Lacoste designed the polo as we know it today.
Polo’s like the original ones are not cool in my eye. I see men in red trousers before me in polo and thinking…..nah……not cool. Middle aged women in culottes and polo……nah…..not cool. It’s a dressy look, nothing wrong with it, but not for me. So how to wear a polo and not look posh, but a bit cool?
How I wear a polo
With a skirt of course! I think a pleated skirt with a hip pass is super beautiful and super feminine. I don’t know if this is the correct translation, but I mean a waistband that follows the curve of the hips and is longer than a regular waistband. This is especially nice with pleated skirts because you don’t immediately have the pleats starting from the belly.
This set is one of the few new clothes I bought this season. The golden espadrilles are from last year. After black, green is my favourite color. The colour of nature! The skirt is a beautiful pistachio green. The only disadvantage is that there are no pockets in it. But the colour and design more than make up for it. The bit posh look of the polo fit perfect with a skirt like this. And because of the khaki colour it’s pretty cool right? So polo perfection for me!
I am wearing green earrings that are very old but the colour always looks fabulous. It is the perfect shade of green. And gold and green bracelets, the gold comes back in the espadrilles that I bought last year for Celina’s wedding. I learned that if you wear a certain colour in your accessories, it’s best to wear it in uneven numbers. So like the golden espadrilles, and the bracelet and my necklace. It’s more pleasant to the eye. I believe that is true.

Would you believe I’ve never had a polo top? Strange really because they are neat and fitted, all the things I like. I was put off by logos. I love these 2 shades of green together! The polo top balances the fuller skirt.
Author
Indeed I would have thought you would wear a polo. Maybe you should try it, but also indeed not one with a logo please! Thanks Gail.
Such a great cool combination of greens, very on-trend this year! Have to add that I’ve never had a polo either, I always think oif it as being completely unfeminine, but you’ve proved me wrong!

Haha, thanks Pamela! I agree with you, I always find them very unfeminine, at least the logo ones!
I go through phases of wearing polo shirts but generally I love them! I love how you styled yours, the green skirt is fabulous! Shame though, about not having pockets!

I do love that skirt and you are so right about the way a skirt with a deep waist and then having the pleats is flattering and feminine. But I’m never sure about the neckline of a polo so I don’t have any in my wardrobe!
I also love the colours of both the skirt and the polo together. Have a great weekend Nancy X

Ooh, Nancy, these shades of green are so beautiful! I love the pistachio shade of that gorgeous shirt. I am not a fan of polo shirts and do not own any, but I really love the way you have feminized your polo with the full skirt and golden sandals. Gorgeous look, my friend!

I can’t picture you in a polo either! That would be a challenge though……
I’ve always loved a polo too – something about the collar and the neckline just seem so crisp and elevated. Love how you’ve styled this Nancy!

I’m not really a fan of polo’s – I see those men and the women with the culottes too 🙂 – but I love how you paired yours with that gorgeous pistachio skirt! I think I now need a pistachio skirt too! xxx

Gorgeous colour isn’t it! I saw a sweater in pistachio a while ago somewhere and was in love!
Hi, Nancy – I like how you strove to make a polo look cool. 🙂 I hardly ever wear polos because preppy isn’t my style. I do love this outfit you created. And I always love a good gold sandal or shoe. These are wonderful! Thank you for your link up – Angie, yourtrueselfblog.com

Thanks Angie! I do like a preppy style, but it has to be with something cool. And I guess my face says, not preppy inside! Lol.
I love how you made the polo stylish and cool. It’s such a classic item and there’s ways to make it work for how we feel, right??

After spending most of my life not being very into polos, I just got a polo-collar sweater that I’m obsessed with. I agree with you—polos ARE cool!

I like the juxtaposition of the “formal” preppy look of the polo shirt with the more feminine shape of the skirt here, Nancy. I would not buy a skirt like that without pockets, though – that’s a deal-breaker for me! I wore a bright yellow polo shirt in high school (1984) and I haven’t worn one since!
Thank you for the link party! I made it! 🙂
Author
Haha, how good of you! I can’t remeber when I wore a polo, if I ever did…..
Hi Nancy,
Sorry I have been MIA. We have been doing a bit of travel this summer. Love the different green tones here, especially with the warm gold tones of your sandals. Hope you are well!
