Last week, Gerben and I had a short holiday after our summer vacation was ruined by my illness. And we had a truly wonderful week. We were so lucky with the weather! If we’d gone this week, we would have had rain all week. We were away for two nights, partly because of Castor, who only recently started eating from his microchip bowl. So we wanted to test first if everything would work out while we were gone. Of course our dear friend Gerdi took also care of the cats. They need to be cuddled.
Short holiday in own country
- The Dunes
- So peaceful
- Our view from the restaurant
On Monday, we drove to Egmond aan Zee, which is about a two-hour drive from us. We arrived at noon and were able to check into our room right away. I always love that, you don’t have to unpack your bags in the afternoon. The hotel is a half-minute bicycle ride from the dunes. Oh yes, we brought our bicycles.
So after unpacking everything, we immediately went cycling. It’s truly beautiful in the dunes, so huge. And the colours of nature right now are, of course, enchanting. It was a bit too cold for me, 15/16 degrees Celsius, but still manageable. We cycled for 3,5 hours. In the evening, we ate at a beach bar and enjoyed the scenery of the sea. Isn’t it always so relaxing at the seaside?
The second day, after a hearty breakfast, because we always eat to much when it’s served, we cycled back into the dunes for another three hours. In the afternoon, we had soup at the same beach bar and then headed home.
Cycling in The Netherlands
- So many of these, Autumn in nature.
- I love food!
- Stew buffet at the Union party.
- At the musseum of False Art, in a fake Rietveld chair.
On Wednesday we had a day at home for our short holiday. With all sorts of things to do. I needed a new laptop, I wanted Gerben to buy some new clothes…..sounds familiar? Misery…lol. And I wanted to go to another store to buy a bedspread and a blanket for the couch. I could manage everything, but I had to take the wheelchair to one store. Last time I was there, I managed without it……..taking a deep breath. We enjoyed a quiet evening at home, and the next day we went to Drenthe, again with the bicycles.
When we arrived, we first had lunch and then went cycling. It was also incredibly beautiful there. Very diverse, cycling through villages, through forests, and across the heath. Another 3,5 hours. We had a nice chat with a man who owns a rest area where you can get coffee and other things. That evening, we had a delicious meal at the hotel. With a non-alcoholic gin and tonic! Really delicious!
The next day, the sun was still shining, and it was supposed to rain later in the day, so we decided to cycle a little further. Only for an hour because we got caught in the rain. But we did have a nice chat with some hikers. Afterward, we went to the Museum of Fake Art. We have a fabulous art forger in The Netherlands. He got caught and served time, but he is really a artist. Geert Jan Jansen if you are interested. Then we went home.
- Suede look skirt mohair jumper.
- Old skirt, new boots and a gilet.
- Old dress and my favourite ballet cardigan.
- New burgundy skirt.
On Saturday, we had an anniversary afternoon for Gerben’s union. Gerben received a pin, which was really nice. And on Sunday, we had dinner with my sister, brother-in-law, and my father’s wife. It would have been my father’s birthday that day. And since he loved Asian food, we went for it! We had a fantastic short holiday!
And now it is time to join a Fancy Friday Fashion party!

I’m glad this vacation went better, it sounded a lot more relaxing!
That was really interesting about Geert Jan Jansen. We have our own forger in Germany, Wolfgang Beltracchi, also a wild story. I once watched a documentary about forgeries in museums and it was fascinating.
Have a lovely weekend!
