On screen style icons-The Thrifty Six

collage of The Thrifty Six

Well this was a hard one and then again not really. Grace chose the theme, on screen style icons. I started thinking way too hard. I was thinking of someone from television, an actress or something. But I couldn’t remember being inspired by anyone from television. I’ve scoured the internet for 80s actresses, presenters and singers from that era to the present. No, none had ever inspired me. Until I let it go and was admiring Kat Farmer’s umpteenth outfit on Instagram. And then the penny dropped!

Welcome to The Thrifty Six. We are a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features pre loved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling pre loved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand.

My on screen style icon

Kat Farmer is known for her role in BBC One’s fashion styling show, You Are What You Wear. But she is a Insta influencer and there is how I know her from. I adore her style, I love it, want to wear it, own it etc. etc. Simple, a lot of black, but it’s more how she wears it! This woman is so relaxed about her looks. It’s almost annoying, lol.

I decided to copy this outfit from my on screen style icon, Kat Farmer. Because black is my favourite colour. It does makes me happy that such a popular woman get’s away with wearing a lot of black. I feel fantastic in this outfit, it couldn’t be more me! Pre loved skirt, €6, from Vinted, but the previous owner lived in my village. So I could collect it at her house! Even more a bargain.

What icons inspired my fashion friends?

Inspired by a timeless goddess…

April’s T6 theme is ‘On Screen Style Icons’, there must be soooo many to choose from…

However, if you name any famous film, I guarantee I won’t have seen it!

I’m not a movie fan but this sheer lace dress really reminds me of something Cher once wore…

…so here I am paying homage to the truly timeless goddess herself.

Big hair and a barely-there dress – all the semi-naked glamour of Cher’s red-carpet appearances circa 1986.

Jodie dressed as Helen Mirren

I went with Helen Mirren, because after I saw her in the movie, Red, she has become my adult icon. Not only do I love her style, but also her attitude and wit. I always say I want to grow up to be her.
Truthfully, most of her photos are with formal gowns, so I found this one of her from the Cannes Festival. In fact, I had created a look that was more similar until I realized that I needed thrifted items, haha.
So I changed to this Cabi jacket that I found recently while thrifting and the shoes used to be my bestie’s shoes and I inherited them when she passed away.

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

One of my all time favorite On Screen Style Icons is Diane Keaton so she was my inspiration for this thrifty look which layers a full brocade mini skirt over a midi length linen shirt dress (both thrifted) for a funky spin on her classic style. I added a preloved polka dot necktie to honor her Annie Hall days but I couldn’t decide which second-hand blazer was best, black velvet or houndstooth, or no blazer at all, so I am sending three photos for you to decide!

I really struggled with this theme – probably because I don’t watch many films. I first thought about Carrie Bradshaw, but none of my outfit choices for here were preloved. Then, while I was searching for inspiration online, I kept seeing images of Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan. This vintage cropped jacket has been hanging on my wall as decoration, so I grabbed it, along with these second hand Zara hareem pants to recreate Madonna’s iconic look.
Grace of Graceful Rags
dress as your style icon

I wanted to pick a more creative theme this time (my ideas in the past have been lame) and decided on On Screen Style Icons. I toyed with dressing as Blair Waldorf, Holly Golightly, Mindy Lahiri… the possibilities of stylish movie and TV characters are endless. But then I realized, I’ve been watching Better Call Saul with my boyfriend and absolutely love how badass Kim Wexler is—and I’m obsessed with her workwear style! So I decided to create a Kim-inspired lawyer outfit with this secondhand pencil skirt. I even included details like her dainty stud earrings, subtle black eyeliner, and signature ponytail (although I couldn’t figure out the single curl).

Although I had a hard time at first to work with this theme, it is a absolute blast to see all my thrifty six friends in their icon copy cat look! I hope you enjoyed it too! Till next month.

Fantastic outfits from everyone! I also love Diane Keaton’s looks, although i don’t have the same taste as her. I’ve never heard of your person, Nancy, but your all-black outfit is excellent.

Oh, my goodness this was fun. I have no idea who I would choose as my on-screen style icon. I do love Diane Keaton and loved Annie Hall, so appreciate Shelbee’s look and nod to Diane and Annie.
You nailed your interpretation, Nancy. So edgy. So fun.
