Our August holiday, pretty boring for most people, I warn you…..

our August holiday

Our August holiday is over, Gerben is back to work and I’m back in my rhythm. We had such a wonderful time, I always get a little sad when it’s over. Mainly because when we’ve been home for a week or two, we start feeling homesick to Rye again. Gerben usually takes two weeks’ holiday in the spring and autumn. In between we go away for nights in our own country.

Our August holiday

Since I can no longer fly, we go to Rye, England, several times a year. We always stay in the same B&B and eat in the same restaurants. And we actually always do the same things there. Sounds terribly boring to most people, but we really enjoy being in Rye and feel very much at home there. Many of the guests who come to the B&B are regulars and we already know many of the guests. And also the staff and locals in the pub! This way we don’t feel like tourists there at all and that is exactly what makes it so nice for us. I’m going to tell you what we did during the holidays.

Our August holiday started on Saturday the 24th of August and on Sunday we went to Rye. That means a 3,5  hour drive to France, 2 hours on the ferry and then a hour drive to Rye. On the day of arrival, usually we arrive around 02.00 pm., after unpacking and catching up, we go to the nature reserve to get some fresh air by the sea. This holiday was early for us, normally we go two weeks later. So it was also still very busy in Rye. But it’s good to be in the nature reserve to unwind.

What we do in Rye area when you have been there for over 20 times……

The next day we went to Scotney Castle. Very beautiful surroundings and we had never been there before. We do have seen more beautiful castles, like Hever and Leeds castle. The next two days we spent time in Hastings. I think Hastings is a wonderful city. I know it is a poor town, but I just love the old promenade and the authentic fish shops. Old town is becoming more and more beautiful with many second-hand shops and great places to have lunch.

What is very nice to visit if you want to see something of the area, is Lewes. A lovely little town with much antique shops. Brighton is a amazing city with a great vibe. You can hire bicycles in Rye and cycle through the little villages. Arundel Castle is amazing. Bateman’s House is nice, Canterbury is very interesting and I can name so many more!

The promenade is hip and trendy with coffee and lunch spots. Mostly vegan, especially at Goat Ledge you can have a delicious lunch! Usually we walk for about three hours, me in the wheelchair of course, we have lunch and then go to the beach. I do some reading, Gerben takes a dip in the sea and we eat fish & chips on the beach in the evening. We always only stay five days because we don’t want to burden our friends too much with taking care of the cats. They come twice a day to pamper them.

So this post is mostly interesting for me, as a memory, lol

On the day of departure we always go to the nature reserve and walk to Winchelsea where we have lunch. Then it’s off to Dover and crying on the boat when I see the beautiful coast of my beloved England disappear again.

It was my birthday during the holidays, when we were back home, and I actually never celebrate it. But the weather was still so nice that I felt like celebrating with family and friends  and a bbq! What a successful day that was! We ate and chatted until late in the evening. During our August holiday we also went to the open-air museum with my father’s wife and had dinner afterwards. We went cycling for two days. Gerben got a flat tire on the first day, so he also walked an hour to the bicycle repair shop.

We went to visit friends who moved north. We had a nice chat and lunch. And on the last day of our holiday we went out for dinner to end it. As you can see, good food plays a big role in our lives, lol. We had a great holiday! And now back to working out, healthy eating, and regularity!

Your holiday sounds delightful! Our yearly trip to the beach is like that, we typically stay in the same place (this year we booked a new place because price went way up at our regular condo) and grill a lot. We walk on the beach and go on bike rides. Food is definitely part of making your holiday a success. Thanks for sharing: it was not boring at all but fun to hear what you do. It makes me want to visit!

Not boring at all, Nancy, but you knew I would say that! I haven’t been to Rye for many years, so perhaps we should schedule a revisit. We’ve been to Canterbury, Winchelsea and Scotney Castle, and lots more as we spent two-week holidays in the area twice. And Lewes is absolutely delightful too, isn’t it?
Thank you for sharing this and some of your holiday back home too. Kroketten op brood must be a typical Dutch thing. I will have to try that when we’re next in the Netherlands 🙂 xxx

Oh yes Lewes is fabulous! Lot’s of second hand shops and a lovely cosy vibe! You never heard of kroketten? It’s fried though, I am not a fan of fried food, in our own country that is, but I can’t say no to kroketten op brood.

Thank you so much for featuring me, what a lovely surprise! I don’t think your holidays sound boring at all. We go to Madeira at least once a year and do the same things, eat in the same places because it’s what we love to do. Spending a day at the lido reading and listening to music is so relaxing, but we also try to do a couple of different things each time. I’ve never been to Rye or any of the South coast of England apart from getting the ferry from Dover to Boulogne on a school trip. Oh, and I did once go on a hovercraft from Dover I think. I really want to go to Brighton, it’s on my bucket list!

That sounds like a lovely vacation. Our trips to Acadia are starting to feel that same way to me; we stay at the same B&B and visit many of the same shops and the same hiking trails. It’s just lovely and somehow feels both like a vacation and a coming home.

It sounds like you had a lovely and relaxing holiday in Rye! Returning to the same place, enjoying the familiar surroundings, and connecting with the locals adds such a personal touch to your trips. Scotney Castle, the beach, and delicious pub food make for a perfect getaway. It’s great that you’ve found your happy place to unwind.

Nancy, that sounds like a lovely trip—I can see why you do it every year! When I was a child, summer vacation was always two weeks (or actually longer, maybe) at my grandparents’ cottage in Michigan, and it’s where I had some of my happiest memories growing up. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with going back to a place you love repeatedly! Also, happy belated birthday!
