Styled by…..tells the story behind someones style. What does a person tell by the way she or he is dressed? What does it say about their personality? When did they began to create their own style? The series is published every first Tuesday of the month.
Do you also have a story to tell, and do you also have beautiful pictures of your style evolution? I, and many of my readers, want to read your story! I would love it if you can join the fun too! You can find all the info in the Styled by…..page or contact me via email@example.com.
So let’s see who tells this month abouth her style!
My style revolves around one thing: dresses! Hello I’m Nina, the blogger behind A World of Dresses. My blog is all about my dresses and the adventures I go on in them. Several years ago, a friend or two had suggested that I blog about all my dresses. Before I was a blogger, everyone knew me as the girl who was always in a dress. So I decided to do it and created A World of Dresses. I purposefully entitled it that because I want to be able to blog about traveling in the future. One year into my blogging journey, I moved to Spain to teach English. Thus began the travel blog side of A World of Dresses.
Overall, my blog consists of fashion tips, dress looks, travel tips, travel stories and posts about the expat life. I’m not just a travel blogger. I also decided to live my life in a different country. That’s an experience not many of us choose, so I like to blog about it.
Where it all started
I would say that my personal style really developed in university. I definitely had a personal style in high school and I think that style still influences what I wear today. It was feminine with lots of girly tops, floral skirts, jewelry and makeup. I do remember in high school how much I didn’t want to fit the mold. So I would wear lots of band t-shirts and my Chuck Taylor sneakers. High school is such a funny time. Looking back, we simply had no idea who we were.
When I went to college, I found that my style really evolved more than anything. As I became more confident in who I was, I had less of a need to dress differently. I was happy with who I was, so I wore what made me happy. And that was dresses.
I remember discovering that I could wear a dress in everyday life. Like I didn’t need a formal event to wear one. This blew my mind. I also remember talking about how when you buy a dress, you basically are buying a whole outfit. So that way of thinking justified many dress purchases.
When I would go home to Cincinnati on weekends and breaks, my mother was notorious for handing me cash and saying “shhh don’t tell your dad!” As a college student, I of course never refused money from my wonderful mother. Around my sophomore year, she started adding in “and don’t go buy dresses with it!” I think that’s when I realized I had developed quite a love for dresses.
I have always loved feminine things such as floral prints and bright colors. There are just so many cute dresses out there! I just love them and cannot really explain why. They’re just fun. I love to have fun with what I wear.
I love vintage styles. The dresses throughout the years were so unique. The flapper style of the 20’s was amazing. The 60’s will always get me. I love the style of all the women on Mad Men. Then of course the 70’s and 80’s were awesome too. I used to live above a vintage shop. That was dangerous. Then I ended up selling some of my dresses back to that shop when I was planning to move overseas.
At the end of the day, I just love the feeling of putting on a dress. When I shop, I typically go straight to the dress section.
I do sometimes wear pants. I will admit that. Here in Spain, I teach English to children. Sometimes that involves sitting on the floor and playing games. Those are days that I might (gasp) wear pants. However when it’s a “me” day where I’m traveling or getting together with friends, I almost always wear a dress.
My dress style
My favorite style of a dress is fit and flare. I just find that that style is the most flattering on me. I also love a shift dress. It took me a while to get on board with the maxi dress trend. However now I have one that I love. The only style I’m not a huge fan of is the bodycon. I get self-conscious of my belly and overall just do not think it’s flattering on me.
As mentioned above, I go for lots of floral prints. I actually went shopping with a friend several weeks ago. We were planning on going out that night, so we both wanted to buy something to wear. She was like “Nina you always wear florals.” I suppose I hadn’t realized it. So I bought a black romper that looks like a skirt in the front (totally not my typical style) and she wore something with florals on it that night. It was like we had switched.
Other style staples
Overall, my style is super feminine. I love to pair my dresses with boots or heels. I have from time to time paired my dresses with my Chuck Taylor sneakers. That can be done well … it just depends on the dress. Since I have so many bold dresses, I love to find a few pairs of more neutral-colored shoes that can go with all of them. So my shoes end up being black, nude or brown. I did recently step out of my comfort zone and get some floral boots!
I love to wear big jewelry. Dangly earrings are my favorite. I love statement necklaces and classic pieces. I have never been much of a ring girl. I have one watch with this cool map of the world. I would like to add a few more watches to my collection.
I believe that you can wear a dress just about whenever you want. If you wish to dress it down, add some boots or sneakers. If you wish to dress it up, add some heels. Flats and sandals are also perfect for the warmer months.
I continue wearing dresses when the weather gets cold. I simply stock up on some nice tights. I love sweater tights. I also love to wear leggings over tights for that extra layer of warmth. Then you just put boots over it all and it looks like the leggings are your tights.
How often do you wear a dress? What is your favorite dress?
Wow, I love dresses too, but Nina has got a huge collection! I love her style. And Nina is coming to the Netherlands by the end of the year, so we probably can meet each other! Yeah!
