The Bad Buy Book: skirts

Welcome to September’s edition of The Bad Buy Book! This month’s theme is: skirts!

The Bad Buy Book is a series hosted by Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge and Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style. We wanted to establish together something fun and new. We both talked about our,,Sitting Shoes,, and so we came up with the idea for The Bad Buy Book!

We all do our best to look great in our outfits, choose the right accessories, the right makeup, the perfect shoes, and wait for the best light to shoot the most flattering outfit photos. And now we are asking you to show us the items you don’t feel your very best in. You know, those ,,Sitting Shoes,, that dress that is actually not quite your color, the skirt that is a size too small but the saleswoman said it looked amazing. We all own those items!  And while they may look fabulous, they don’t always feel fabulous! So we want you to show us your bad buys and tell us the story about them! What made you purchase the item?  And why do you dislike it now?  And why not share them with us?  We buy these things for a reason then hide them in the back of the closet.  Now it’s their turn to share the limelight.

Every month on the 15 th, we will both publish a post sharing the photos you have sent us along with a few sentences about the bad buy. Photo submissions will be due by the 1 st of each month so we have time to edit and compile all of the entries. At the end of each post we will let you know the theme for the next month’s post. Photos and the story of your ”Bad Buy” can be emailed to or Please put”Bad Buy” in the subject line.

So, time to take a look at our Bad Buy Skirts!

First is my dear co-host Shelbee of Shelbee on the EdgeThe Bad Buy Book: skirts“When I saw this faux leather pencil skirt, I had to have it.  Because, well, a black leather pencil skirt is completely bad ass.  But only if it fits properly.  Which it doesn’t.  It is crazy tight around the midsection.  I can’t sit or breathe in it!  But the next size up was much too big.  And how the heck do you get those horrible creases out of the faux leather?  I haven’t a clue.”

( I iron faux leather skirts Shelbee! Inside out!)

Next the always lovely Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style

The Bad Buy Book: skirts

“Well, it’s another episode of what Jodie can buy that really doesn’t work—ha ha!! ( Jodie’s words, not ours!)

Here’s my maxi skirt that I bought last year at the thrift store! I wanted a knit maxi skirt, and I love the colors, but it just didn’t work well for my style. There was too much going on in the print, and I never felt comfortable wearing it!!

I suppose I could have tried other options to see if something would work, but I gave up and donated it!”

And  finally me with my bad Buy skirt. The Bad Buy Book: skirtsI bought this one on a market in Rye on a holiday. Very cheap! I fall for cheap, isn’t that awfull! But I only like the colors, nothing else. It’s cotton and I don’t like cotton. It doesn’t form to your body. The Bad Buy Book: skirtsThis is also a bad buy skirt, it’s actually a very boring color and I never wear it as a skirt. I wore it here as a dress! But this one I bought when I was still working and got 50% discount, so I bought a lot of clothing then………still do……without the discount…..

That’s it for this month! Hope you liked to read about our Bad Buys and that you will participate next month!

The October theme will be: Jackets!

I like your cotton skirt Nancy! I think you’ve styled it really well. You have to feel good in clothes though, otherwise they just end up unworn at the back of the wardrobe.

Yes you are so right! And the cotton one makes me feel like a person I am not.

  2. September 15, 2017 / 12:37 am

It’s funny how something can look okay in photos, but not feel right at all!!
And hilarious that you had two for this subject.
Now, I’m not sure I’ll have one for jackets—but let me think about it!

    • September 15, 2017 / 7:57 pm

I know you already donated it, but I like the skirt on you! Did you experiment with tops that are the color of the skirt? I know, I know, the skirt is gone, but still… 🙂

      • September 16, 2017 / 12:26 pm

Ha ha, I did, but it still didn’t make me feel that it is,, me,, .

    • September 16, 2017 / 9:22 am

Haha, oh come on Jodie! You must have had at least one jacket! Or Nancy of your mum

  3. September 15, 2017 / 12:39 am

I remember your post with the skirt Nancy and I can’t see why you don’t like it! In fact I like all the skirts that all three of you are wearing. I understand what you mean about Cotton though, maybe a few washes would soften it? xx

    • September 16, 2017 / 9:22 am

Oh could it? I only washed it once. Perhaps I should try that! Thanks Laurie!

  4. September 15, 2017 / 2:21 am

Nancy, I adore the concept of the “Bad Buy Book” but I’ve never thought to photograph myself in something I’m giving away because it was a bad buy. I will try to change that and hoping I’ll be able to contribute to next month’s post. Thanks for your hard work on this entertaining feature and for the link up.

    • September 16, 2017 / 9:23 am

Oh that would be so nice! And seeing myself in my bad buys made me realise what I did wrong buying them!

    • September 16, 2017 / 9:23 am

      Thank you Tina!

  5. September 15, 2017 / 6:21 am

Ok, there must be something very wrong with me, because I like each and every bad buy here, at least how it looks. I can certainly understand how a skirt that is tight, is a bad buy, but it looks amazing…
Also loved both skirts Nancy, and Jodi ‘s maxi…

And now I know how to get wrinkles out of faux leather!

    • September 16, 2017 / 9:23 am

      Haha, Thank you Elle!

  6. September 15, 2017 / 7:21 am

Maybe the tie-dye skirt would be better with another top! I like it! The printed skirt is lovely, but you look stunning in the grey top and black skirt!

    • September 16, 2017 / 9:23 am

      Thank you Yvonne!

  7. September 15, 2017 / 7:39 am

The skirts look amazing, but of they don’t feel good they’re not good at all! I think I might have a bad buy jacket, though I got to look for it if I still have it..

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:20 pm

Yes, that would be lovely! Search for it!

  8. September 15, 2017 / 7:57 am

I like the last skirt Nancy (is it grey or black? Can’t decide) – but I have a couple that I don’t like which people have said they do, so it’s all subjective!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:21 pm

It’s actually brown! It is, it’s how a garment makes you feel!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:21 pm

      Ha ha ha, thank you!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:21 pm

      It is!

  9. September 15, 2017 / 12:18 pm

I like all the bad buys!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:21 pm

Ha ha, then join us next month!

  10. September 15, 2017 / 12:36 pm

I think we all have bad buys from time to time. I find that as I get older I do it less often which is good because it means I learn from mistakes. I just this summer donated a lot of my mistakes! Ha ha! Great post!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:22 pm

Well, you don’t learn fast then Cheryl! that’s good, then you can join is!

  11. September 15, 2017 / 1:46 pm

This is such a great idea! We definitely all have those items in our closets!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:59 pm

      Oh yes we do!

  12. September 15, 2017 / 1:56 pm

While I think all of these skirts look pretty darn good if the owner isn’t feeling it then it’s days are numbered! I have a tendency to buy things because of the price and I realized when I cleaned out my closet that I had wasted a lot of money doing that! I’m trying to change my ways and make more thoughtful decisions but I still love a good sale!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:24 pm

Me too! Most of my bad buys are the cheap ones! I really try not to fall for the bargains.

  13. September 15, 2017 / 3:02 pm

These skirt fails are too funny! I have some skirts that are just waaaay too short. I always cave to a good sale.

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:24 pm

      We do too!

  14. September 15, 2017 / 3:47 pm

Haha! I love this post, it hit home with me! I have no many purchase regrets like your skirts, great idea to have a little fun and show off our fashion don’ts.

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:58 pm

      Thank you very much!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:24 pm

Thank you, but they are not,,me,,

  15. September 15, 2017 / 4:04 pm

This is always such a fun series to read. I do really like the colors of your cotton skirt and think it is beautiful. I know none of that matters if you don’t feel great in it. Have a wonderful weekend, Nancy!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:25 pm

Thank you Jennie! Join us next month!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:25 pm

Yes, I hate it when clothes are wrinkled!

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:25 pm

      Thank you Amy!

  16. September 15, 2017 / 7:59 pm

That’s a fun series, Nancy! I actually like your second skirt! I don’t see boring but versatile and nice. 🙂

    • September 16, 2017 / 12:27 pm

Well, I don’t like maxi skirts to much. I think that’s the problem

    September 17, 2017 / 11:59 pm

Honestly, your skirt with the yellow print is awesome! I actually love that print. I understand it doesn’t fit well, but it’s pretty! I like the black one too! Ha ha.

    • September 18, 2017 / 8:59 am

Thank you! It s more about how they make me feel! And they don t make me feel very elegant

  18. September 18, 2017 / 9:30 am

OMG Nancy, that last skirt on your bad buy list is one of my all time favourites on you…I think you don’t like it because it is a little different from your usual style but believe me it looks amazing on you!!!

    xoxo Yvonne

    • September 18, 2017 / 10:39 am

Are you serious? I don’t like it on me at all! But thank you dear!

    • September 18, 2017 / 8:22 pm

      Thank you Vanessa!

  19. September 18, 2017 / 7:25 pm

De laatste, waaronder waar jij opstaat, zien er gewoon top uit. De eerste twee kan ik wel begrijpen.

    • September 18, 2017 / 9:46 pm

Thank you darling! Have a good week!

  20. September 18, 2017 / 11:50 pm

I think that is so interesting you don’t like cotton. It is such a great fabric to wear! It is true it doesn’t hug your curves though.

That pleather skirt from Shelby made me laugh. Faux leather always seems to get wrinkles.

    • September 19, 2017 / 8:39 am

It s a pure product, I know, but I never like it. Also not in blouses!
